Sapele Mahogany (Sapelli, Sapeli) - Entandrophragma cylindricum
Due to its more consistent color and grain characteristic compared to other mahogany looks, Sapele is Decore-ative Specialties mahogany material of choice.
General Description
• Heartwood is shades of golden to dark red / brown
• Darkens with age
• Ribbon Grain is common
Physical Properties
• Janka Rating System = 1,410 (higher Janka rating = harder wood)
Where It Grows
• Tropical Africa
• Grows to a heights up to 145 feet high (rarely 195 feet).
• The trees can be huge and 4 foot diameter logs are not uncommon.
Relative Abundance
• Readily available though some countries have restrictions on felling these trees.

• Sapele has a distinct, cedar-like scent while being worked.
• It can also react when put into direct contact with iron, causing discoloration and staining.
